Position Summary

  • To improve psychosocial support for adolescents attending Mbeya COE with focus on vulnerable adolescents, adherence and retention in care, and sexual and reproductive health.                                                                                                                                                                    
  • T o improve local support systems for ALHIV at satellite facilities, with specific focus on retention in care and adherence to treatment.
  • Duties and Responsibilities

    • Promote an adolescent friendly working environment in which clients are supported to help reach their full potential and successfully transition into adults living positively
    • Coordinate monthly adolescent psychosocial support group activities including Teen Club and Pre-Teen Club working with Baylor staff, teen leaders, teens, and community members as appropriate
    • Coordinate monthly Satellite Teen Clubs at facilities throughout the Southern Highland Zone, including development of new Satellite Teen Clubs as needed
    • Coordinate the Teen Leaders Program and serve as mentors and support personnel for adolescents enrolled in the Teen Leaders Program
    • Coordinate and support Income Generating Activities including Stitch by Stitch, Bead by Bead, Read and Write and Benki Yetu
    • Support adolescents with complex psychosocial challenges through the “Helping Hands/High Risk” program in conjunction with the social work and counseling departments
    • Support adolescent-targeted educational efforts - such as Teen Talk Tuesday program and adolescent reproductive health services - through development of curricula, facilitation of sessions and monitoring and evaluation of the program
    • Support Jitambue (Adherence Support) Club, as needed by the Jitambue Club leadership team
    • Create and implement the Teen Cell leader program: a new program focused on identifying adolescent peer treatment supporters living in geographic areas near at risk patients and linking these at risk patients with a treatment supporter.
    • Develop administrative systems and operating guidelines for the Psychosocial Unit in line with Baylor Tanzania’s Care and Treatment Policy
    • Provide psychosocial training, guidance and support to community volunteers, community members such as teachers and health care providers involved in care and support of HIV infected children and adolescents nationwide in line with the existing training guidelines and care and treatment guidelines
    • Provide technical guidance to project/programme proposal writing, planning and implementation of successfully approved and funded proposals as per Baylor Tanzania’s Project guidelines
    • Advocate for the rights and improved care of HIV positive children, adolescents and their families
    • Assist in development/adoption of  curriculum for training health care workers on psychosocial support for adolescents living with HIV
    • Standardize and disseminate health education and behavior change messages/ information to the clients and the general public in line with the public education health guidelines
    • Assist with monitoring and evaluation of the performance of all adolescent activities established by Baylor Tanzania and report on indicators for all activities
    • Other specific clinical tasks as assigned and needed by clinical director team

     

    Qualifications / Skills

     

    • Degree of Education, Counseling Psychology, Bachelor in Social Work or Community Development from a recognized institution preferred
    • A minimum of 2 years work experience in a clinical setting
    • Additional training in adolescent and/ or HIV related issues is an added advantage

     

    Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

    • Knowledge of the unique behavioral, psychosocial and medical challenges of adolescents, , as well as experience working with adolescents and their families/caregivers
    • Knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to patients’ rights
    • Knowledge of community services and interventions targeting adolescents
    • Knowledge of family and group dynamics and a range of intervention techniques
    • Knowledge and experience in working with Government and private organizations, community resources, laws, regulations and policies which govern the program, methods and principles of casework supervision and training
    • Skill in establishing rapport with a client and in applying techniques or assessing psychosocial, behavioral and psychological aspects of client problems
    • Excellent communication skills both oral and written
    • Ability to supervise and train others
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and networks with members of other support organizations
    • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively
